Description/Album Notes:

With the turmoil of Sinister Death at the time and in fear of becoming typecast Ashley departed from the bands operations to write and record an album that displayed her prowess on the harder edge side. Enlisting the help of longtime friend, Guitarist, Billy Arnold and a slew of talented writers such as Jon Bon Jovi, Jim Vallance and more Ashley continued to carry the Metal torch with this studio album...!

Review: After a six-year run with making Progressive Metal concept albums with Sinister Death, death-metal pioneer Ashley Dalby released Too Much Sex in 1997. Her self-imposed exile occurred after her unhappiness with the legalities the band was suffering from. It's a bit ironic that Dalby, while always riding under the radar because of her quiet nature, was equally as influential in crafting Death Metal as she was at crafting splendid Pop-Metal, had to return with the help of Jon Bon Jovi. Dalby's guitar style helped lay the foundation for the superbly crafted metal sound others have rode to superstardom. Bon Jovi and Dalby co-produced the album and co-wrote two of the fifteen songs. Too Much Sex was also issued on Ashley's own label, W.T.S., which means Within The Screams. Unfortunately, the album is generally overproduced and noisy and most of the choruses are shout-along affairs. When Dalby produced herself, the songs had rumbling power, but there was a smoothness to them. Dalby plays the guitars but is joined by longtime friend, and guitar-virtuoso, Billy Arnold on the guitar and keyboards. The two are assisted by the likes of respected bass guitarist Steve Bostic and drummer Edward Enslin.

Three impressively spasmodic synthesizer segments -- "Theme Prelude," "Great Tribulation," and "Seven Bowls Of Armageddon" -- open Too Much Sex and lead into its highlight, "Blood on the Streets". This disturbing anti-heroin song features a relentless, catchy groove but the lyrics starkly examine a gang fight and heroine abuse. A spunky, swaying beat, a nice chorus hook, and a bluesy guitar solo make "Medicine Man" one of the best cuts. "Someday" is a typical power ballad. "Young Love" (co-written by Bon Jovi, Dalby, and song doctor Jim Vallance) and "This Ain't Love" are redeemed by Dalby's guitar runs -- especially the tones. The bombast is kept to a minimum on "Touch of Madness," but sonically it is so out of place.

The quality branching out begins, however, with a pair of fingerpicking instrumentals -- "Lickity Bit" and "Transition" -- and the swinging jazz-reggae of "Meet You There." - The album's highlight is "Bright Lights" and it speaks volumes that this is the only complete song Dalby wrote by herself. At nearly six and a half minutes, Dalby is able to stretch out with some wild guitar riffing and a light-speed organ solo. Too Much Sex should have been better...
